Dressrosa is a vibrant nation known for its perpetual sunshine and cheerful atmosphere, yet beneath this facade lies a history of tragedy involving the Celestial Dragons. The kingdom was once ruled by the benevolent King Riku Doldo III until he was forced to abdicate by Donquixote Doflamingo. For years, the populace lived in a delusion created by Sugar's Devil Fruit powers (not just the Birdcage), causing them to forget their true history and view Doflamingo as a hero while erasing memories of the rightful king. The island also serves as a critical hub for the production of SMILE fruits, artificial Zoan-type Devil Fruits that grant users animal abilities; however, those who fail to successfully eat a SMILE are cursed with an inability to express emotions other than smiling, losing their original facial expressions and the ability to cry entirely.
